Gettysburg & Vicksburg at 150

This week we mark the 150th anniversary of two of the most significant moments in the American Civil War – the Battle of Gettysburg and the surrender of Vicksburg. While countless volumes have already been written on both of these events, new scholarship and emerging technologies offer us the opportunity to reexamine these turning points of history with fresh eyes. Expand your knowledge of these great battles today!

June 2013
Dear Civil War Preservationist,

The past month has been a flurry of activity here at the Civil War Trust. We returned from our hugely successful Annual Conference in Vicksburg just in time to put the final touches a host of content and other projects designed around the tremendous sesquicentennial anniversaries we are about to commemorate.

Whether you're able to make it to Pennsylvania or Mississippi in person, or are following events from the privacy of your own home, we have a full compliment of offerings to help you be part of the action – far more than I have space to include in this month's newsletter. I sincerely urge you to browse our website and take advantage of these diverse and dynamic articles, apps, videos and more.

Moreover, we are in the final sprint to the finish to complete fundraising efforts to purchase land at both Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Please consider making a contribution today so that we can give both of these outstanding national parks a permanent and lasting anniversary "gift" – more land to help tell the story of American bravery that transpired on those fields. Visit www.civilwar.org/takeaction to learn how.

- Jim Lighthizer, Civil War Trust President
