Media Advisory: Civil War Sites Seek Volunteers for Park Day 2014

(Washington, D.C.) – As our nation commemorates the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War, volunteers across the country will once again answer their nation’s call to service. On Saturday, April 5, 2014, history buffs, community leaders and preservationists will team up with the Civil War Trust, History™ and Take Pride in America at roughly 100 historic sites in 26 states to participate in the 18th annual Park Day.

Park Day provides an opportunity for volunteers of all ages and abilities to not only keep these sites preserved, but pristine, by taking on maintenance projects large and small. In 2013, nearly 8,000 volunteers at more than 100 sites across the country donated more than 36,000 service hours.  This year, organizers hope to build on the momentum and enthusiasm that has surrounded Park Day since its inception in 1996.

America’s hallowed grounds are living monuments not only to the men in the blue and gray, but to all of the nation’s veterans who have served in the military.  Furthermore, preserved battlefields are outdoor classrooms, teaching young and old alike about the sacrifices made to forge this nation.
