National Preservation Group's Annual Conference Focuses on Battles of Manassas

Hundreds of Civil War buffs and preservationists will make push “To the Gates of Washington”

(Chantilly, Va.) – Hundreds of Civil War buffs and preservationists from around the country will converge on Chantilly as part of the Civil War Trust’s annual conference.  The four-day event will be held at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles hotel from May 18–22, 2011.

The annual event gives Trust members an opportunity to celebrate the organization’s successes while learning about the rich Civil War heritage of the battles waged around Manassas, Va. — a particularly appropriate location given the 150th anniversary of the First Battle of Manassas this summer.  The conference is made possible in part by a generous contribution from History™.  Participants will experience lectures, tours and presentations by historians, including Garry Adelman, Ray Brown, Ed Bearss, Hank Elliott, Clark B. Hall, John Hennessey, Christopher Kolakowski, Robert E.L. Krick, Robert K. Krick, Greg Mertz, Mike Miller, Richard Sommers and Greg Wolf.

The theme of this year’s conference is “To the Gates of Washington,” and it will explore Civil War battles fought in and around Manassas, Va.  Multiple tours will explore the battles of First and Second Manassas — some featuring lengthy hikes, while others focus on particular aspects of the fighting and its legacy, from the legendary figure of “Stonewall” Jackson to then-and-now photography.  Other tour options include the battles of Brandy Station and Cedar Mountain, the Bristoe Campaign, Mount Vernon and Washington, D.C. Today.
Other special programs for registered attendees include discussion panels, lectures and multimedia presentations.  The high point of the conference will be a banquet and awards ceremony to be held on Saturday, May 21 at the Westfields Marriott Washington Dulles hotel.

The public is invited to explore the event’s extensive exhibit hall on Thursday, May 19 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
