Volunteers Needed to Plant Trees on Mullins Farm at Chancellorsville
April 1 tree planting is opportunity to restore historic wood line on Chancellorsville Battlefield
(Spotsylvania County, Va.) - On Saturday, April 1, volunteers from across the country will travel to Chancellorsville to help plant 2,100 trees on the Lick Run Battlefield (formerly known as the Mullins Farm). The purpose of the tree planting is to restore the historic Civil War-era wood line.
The tree planting is part of the Civil War Preservation Trust's (CWPT) Park Day 2006 festivities. Park Day is an annual nationwide event to help maintain and restore America's Civil War battlefields, cemeteries and shrines. Nearly 100 historic sites in 22 states will participate in Park Day 2006.
Park Day is underwritten by a grant from the History Channel. This year's Park Day has been recognized by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a "Take Pride in America" event. Special thanks to Dwight Stallard of the Virginia Department of Forestry for arranging the donation of all 2,100 trees that will be planted that day.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring shovels and work gloves if they have them, and to dress appropriately (the event will be held rain or shine). Volunteers will be provided with lunch and Park Day t-shirts. Following the tree planting, a historian will give a short walking tour of the property. Several local government officials are expected to attend.
