Please note: When the focus of the Civil War shifted south in 1862, the Orange & Alexandria Railroad became an important lifeline in the support of Union forces occupying the area. Even though Confederate forces had retreated, persistent guerilla raids by irregulars under the command of John S. Mosby threatened this important supply line. To combat this problem Union General George Meade ordered the construction of a series of earthwork forts along the railroad in the spring of 1863. Cannon Branch Fort was one of these earthworks.
