Babbits has an extensive background in military and maritime archaeology. He has worked on fort and battle sites ranging from the French and Indian War to the World War III POW camp featured in the Great Escape. Along the way he found time to serve as a rear rank private in Revolutionary and Civil War recreated units that put his own military service into an historical perspective. His books on the battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse have been praised for their use of extensive documentation provided by sworn testimony in veteran pension applications.
