MEMBERSHIP and DONATIONS

How much of my contribution to CWPT is tax deductible?
Please see this page for our current membership benefits and tax deductible information.

How can I give a memorial gift?
Send your donation including your name and address to our Hagerstown office with a short note telling us whom the donation is in memory of. If you would like to have a 3rd party notified of your gift, please include their name and address, too.

What is the Civil War Preservation Trust's Combined Federal Campaign Number?
Our Combined Federal Campaign number is 11785. It can take up to 18 months from the time you sign up for the CFC until we receive your name and information. We will only receive your name if you check the box to release your information to us.

How much of my donation goes to administration and fundraising?
CWPT spends approximately 13% each year on membership, fundraising and our administrative expenses (salaries, rent, supplies, etc), with 87% of all funds going towards our programs. This is well below the non-profit industry standard of 25%.

PRESERVATION

Why doesn't the CWPT support preservation efforts for Civil War Sites that are not battlefields?
The Civil War Preservation Trust is a strong advocate for all Civil War sites; however, we are limited by our organization's By-laws to donate, buy, and/or preserve only battlefields.

Who should I contact for information about preserving a Civil War site that is not a battlefield (i.e. cemeteries, prisons, houses, etc)?
Your State's Historic Preservation Office is the first place to call. Local Historic groups can also be great resource to find additional support.

MISCELLANEOUS

How do I contact a Trustee of the CWPT (National Advisory Board, a member, etc)?
We do not give out personal contact information for our Board of Trustees, National Advisory Board, members, or personal staff information. We will take your information and relay your message to that person.

How do I submit an article to Hallowed Ground for publication?
We will accept unsolicited articles to Hallowed Ground. However, we do not guarantee that they will be printed. Entries can be sent to the following address:
Attn: Hallowed Ground Editor
1331 H Street NW, Suite 1001
Washington, D.C. 20005

How can I obtain a copy of the Official Guidebook to Civil War Sites?
There are several places you can obtain your copy of the guide book. You can purchase it from your local bookstore; if they do not have it on the shelf, they can easily order it for you. Amazon.com also sells this book. Visit their website at www.amazon.com. Last, you can order a copy by calling the Harpers Ferry Historical Association at 1-800-821-5206. Approximate cost $18.00.

When can I begin sending in photos for the Annual Photo Contest?
We will accept your photos at anytime as long as they are clearly marked with all the correct information (Name, address, phone number, category, photo site/description, age if entering Junior category). Please send entries to our Washington D.C. office.

Can CWPT determine the authenticity and value of my Civil War item?
CWPT does not employ an expert in this field; therefore, we cannot determine whether or not an item is real and/or valuable. We suggest you contact a nearby university, museum, historical society for information.

Can CWPT tell me about ancestors who fought in the Civil War?
The Civil War Preservation Trust does not keep a soldier archive. The National Archives, however, keeps extensive and complete records on Civil War Soldiers. You can visit the National Archives on the web at www.archives.gov or by calling 1-866-272-6272.
Several other helpful sites include
www.civilwardata.com.
National Park Service Soldiers and Sailors System
Comprehensive regimental histories but minimal information on personnel: www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html

How would I donate a Civil War relic, collection of books, etc. to the Trust?
Generally, CWPT does not accept donations of relics. We do not have the resources or the expertise to restore/archive/preserve items from that time period. A university, museum, or historical society are better equipped to handle these pieces. CWPT does occasionally accept book donations. Please call us toll free at 1-800-298-7878 for more information.

Who should I contact at the Trust for permission to relic hunt on one of its battlefields?
CWPT does not allow relic hunting on its battlefields.
